Through our ReNew Athens program, Athens Hab renovates entire blocks of multi-unit housing to serve our neighbors whose income levels put market rents out of reach.
Our project on Magnolia Terrace began in 2016 with the purchase of property from the estate of Athens theater owner and builder Sol Abrams, a beloved member of the Athens community and pioneer of gender and racial equality who, like us, believed that everyone deserves a decent, affordable place to live.
The current project comprises 20 units with close access to grocery stores, health care, schools, a local library, and public transportation. It is expected to take two years to complete.
You can see how it’s done in the video below, created by a member of a volunteer student group assisting in the renovation.
None of this would be possible without the hard work of our construction crew, the dedication of our volunteers, and the support of our local sponsors. Major financial sponsorship for this project is provided by:
Once complete and fully occupied, these homes will constitute a community, a safe and affordable neighborhood where residents can enjoy peace and security and live fulfilling, productive lives.
Athens Area Habitat thanks everyone, from donors to builders to volunteers, who have helped to make this transformation possible. Your generosity and hard work will have a lasting impact in the lives of residents who are afforded a new opportunity, and in the rejuvenation of a neighborhood that will come to life again and once more be a true home.
